The Benefit of Twitter

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I started off on Twitter about 5 months ago. First I sat back and watched then I followed others and then they began following me. Today I have nearly 2,100 followers. But what does that mean; How has that affected my business or anything at all?

If you use Twitter as a social network (gathering business cards = followers  without having to go to a trade show) it can save you a lot of money and time. I review other people’s Tweets to see what they have to say and I have found a very useful too that helps me keep my audience on my web pages a little longer and boosts my conversion rate.

If I Tweet something that has a TinyURL attached, which I am tracking, I see that more people go to the link I posted. For some sociological reason it seems that a lot of folks on Twitter feel that the more followers you have, the more reason there is to follow you. And so you start getting that snowball effect whereby people follow you without you having to follow them first.  Now the ego is feeling better.

I have talked to people who feel that Twitter isn’t for them or it is a waste of time. Hardly. It has cost me a little time in developing my “fan base” but it has paid off so far with a lot more in terms of networking with people who are actually willing to help one another and of course I have acquired new clients as well.

Try it, use it, experiement, and don’t be afraid. Twitter is one of those great “come along once in a long timer” tools that can benefit us all.
