Jerks Took My 800 Number

Someone emailed me and told me that my 800 number wasn’t working. I called and sure enough there was some musical thing playing with some guy who you could barely hear through the guitar solo … arrrrrggggthhhh.

It took me a long time to get 888-SEO-9234. Now apparently it is gone. I put up my cell phone for now. Pisses me off though.

How to Recognize a Bad SEO Article

In the SEO News (seo-news.com) July 2nd, Issue #277 has their main article, written by Enzo F. Cesario of BrandSplat.com- the article is titled, “How to Recognize a Bad SEO Company.”

It’s not a bad artticle. I agree with a lot of what Mr. Cesario says – however, in a section toward the bottom, “Be Cautious of SEO Firms That Say They Can Optimize And Promote Your Site For A Low, Monthly Fee” and the second paragraph says, “…Not-so-legitimate fees could include monthly re-submittĂng of your site to search engines, “tweaking” your code to keep up with changes and …”.

I take exception ot that statement and find it incredible that he would say that.

One of the main reasons you keep on an SEO specialist or Firm is to maintain your SEO Strategy until you achieve your goals. When a competitor moves ahead of you, you have to adjust your strategy. When you are in at #6 and you want to get to #3, you have to adjust to get there. I call it tuning.

The paragraph goes on, “… The worthwhile companies that charge a monthly fee will usually be able to tell you exactly how much it is per month to generate blog entries or generate and distribute articles or press releases. And it won’t be for the low, low price of $79.95.”

Here we go again. Someone is going to tell me how I should price my services, how to be competitive or otherwise run my business. Perhaps some one in the current White House Administration has been reading his dribble as well.

GO to his website and see what they do, what their product is. It is call Brandcasting and they say it isn’t expensive.

“BRANDCASTING IS NOT EXPENSIVE.

Less than most PPC campaigns. Brandsplat starts iBrandcasting at $2,395 per month with a one-time set up fee of $1,995. “

Now, I don’t know about you, but $4,400 is not what I would call pocket change. It seems like his comment above about charging $79.95 was is some, disjointed way, trying to justify his cost.

I now dub him, Enzo “Obama” Cesario!

And I cannot believe that SEO-News published this with both eyes open.

SEO and Milk

What is 2% milk really? I mean, how come I can’t get 50% milk?

Well, because 2% represents the percentage of the total volume. 50% percent would be butter! So if you take a gallon of 2% milk and pour it into 2, separate, 1/2 gallon containers, then it should be …. it’s still 2% milk.

So what does this have to do with SEO?

If you take a crappy SEO strategy from your home page and apply it to your other pages, you still have a crappy SEO strategy!

Before you apply anything to your site in an attempt to make it rank better, you had better ensure that it is part of an overall sound strategy. If I have a partly good piece and a really good piece, I have AN OVERALL PARTLY GOOD STRATEGY! Nothing in SEO can be better than the weakest or worst part. If it isn’t all really good, then it’s not good overall.

You have to validate each piece of your strategy to make it the best possible for the overall strategy. And that is not always as easy as it sounds.

Competitive markets are easier to evaluate than non-competitive one’s. There’s more information available to include in the analysis and therefor your data is more complete and you have more to compare it to. Less data means more assumptions or predictive modeling is used. People that do not have proven skills in analysis can only rely on intuitive or made up reasoning. Not a sound approach.

I have a client who is asking about the differences between Alexa provided bounce rates versus his collected Google Analytics bounce rates. What is the very first thing you should tell the client? What are several things you can tell the client right away without doing any analysis?

You have to know what you are talking about and don’t try and BS your client. If you don’t know, tell them so and then tell them you will research and get back to them. Build confidence and instill trust. Don’t try and sell them 50% milk.

Badda Bing Badda Boom – MSN Bing on the Move!

In a report on June 4th, it was reported that MSN’s new Bing search engine has taken over market share and displaced competitor Yahoo! for the #2 spot. Although in the UK the numbers are much closer to what Google provides.

Bing is on the Move.
